Adoption Application

Our dogs are our priority! Finding them the best possible home for their unique
personalities and needs is what we do. We are pleased you sought out rescue as a means
to add to your family.

What we do

We rescue dogs. You adopt them. The dogs are no longer in danger of losing their lives once they are in our care. You do by adopting allow us room to help others so you are saving lives by adopting our rescue.

We are able to help Bostons because of our foster program. That means that our dogs aren’t in one location. Unfortunately, we don’t have visiting hours. But the great thing about that is our dogs become part of a family, and have a home until they are adopted.

Our process

We do not adopt with a numbers system. It may take time for the right dog to find you. We match dogs based on your family lifestyle to get the right fit. We want all of our dogs to have forever homes and our goal is to ensure that our dogs are happy.

We do not have time to totally obedience train or house train every dog that comes to us. We do work on house training and will clearly state if a dog is house trained. Sometimes we’re lucky and get a well-trained dog, but most of the time the dogs need someone to love them, and is willing to work with them to make them into the best dogs that they are capable of being. We do work on some training other than house training, for example, we work on and off leash. Each foster does as much as he or she can to work on training. Adopters are expected to enroll in obedience classes or work with their dogs to train and maintain training with their dogs or as needed. If you expect a perfectly trained dog, then a rescue is not the dog for you.

Please note that ODBTR is not a rehab for dogs with major behavioral issues. We do not knowingly place a human aggressive dog in a home, which is why the dog is in foster with us for at least several weeks before placement.

Application Process

The answers you give on our application will help us find the best possible match between you and the dogs available for adoption. Remember we are searching for the perfect home for each individual dog. You may have a perfect home for one dog, but not another. Even if you fall in love with the looks or bio of a particular dog and submit an application stating that is the dog you want to adopt, we are not obligated to adopt that particular dog to you if we consider the dog is not the right match for your household. We will suggest other dogs that we consider suitable for your household based upon the answers to our questions in the application. Keep in mind this is not an over night process and we are volunteers, so please expect some waiting time (1-6 weeks) to be involved. Please answer all questions as completely as possible. If any information is omitted, the application will be discarded. We reserve the right to inspect the prospective home environment both before and after adoption without any advanced notice. In addition, if we discover that any information on this form was knowingly falsified, we reserve the right to refuse to adopt a dog to you and to take any adopted dog back into our possession.

OLD DOMINION BOSTON TERRIER RESCUE RESERVES THE RIGHT TO REFUSE ANY APPLICATION WITHOUT EXPLANATION

If your application is approved, we will require an adoption donation to help with the ever-increasing costs of veterinary care for our rescued dogs. Keep in mind that we spend whatever is necessary to make sure our Boston’s are healthy prior to adoption. What we spend on them does not reflect in our adoption fees. More often than not we spend two or three times more on needed vet care than we charge in adoption fees. Should we spend less on needed care than the actual adoption fee that money goes to make sure other Boston’s are given all they need.

Adoption fees vary depending on the age, health and any issues each individual Boston may have. Some fees are sponsored, that is of no cost to the adopter. This is for some senior and special needs Boston’s. Our average fees are $150 to $500. Remember we base each fee on health and age so our youngest Boston’s unless special needs are always $500. All of our Boston’s are spayed or neutered, up to date on shots, micro chipped and wellness tested. If you are not willing to work on house training please seek your next Boston love from another group. Often the only reason people give up a Boston is because they cannot seem to house train them. They may be perfectly house trained while in foster care. This does not mean at your house they will be perfectly house trained.They look to us for leadership, guidance and discipline. You must be a strong leader to live with a Boston. If not they will lead you and rule your life. No one wants that, not even the Boston.
